Unveiling Hidden Dangers: Toxins in Commercial Lipsticks

Lipstick is a staple in many beauty routines, adding a splash of color and confidence to our daily lives. However, beneath the vibrant hues and glossy finishes, many commercial lipsticks harbor ingredients that may pose health risks.

Before we delve into specifics, let’s first keep it real. Will wearing lipstick occasionally cause long-term damage? Probably not. But regular exposure to heavy metals, carcinogens, parabens and other toxins can cause hormonal disruptions and long-term damage. Scientists are still researching what, and how much, damage these chemicals can cause.

As you’re aware, our hormones account for countless factors in our health and well-being. Any disruptions to the natural functioning of the endocrine system is cause for concern.

But let’s also avoid fear-mongering that is so prevalent.

Not every synthetic ingredient is harmful, just like not every natural ingredient is beneficial. Use common sense, stay informed, and read ingredient labels closely. Reach out to manufacturers with questions.

Here’s a closer look at several concerning components, and why it’s wise to be cautious:

Lead

Lead is a heavy metal that has been detected in various lipsticks. Notably, a 2011 FDA study found lead in all 400 lipsticks tested, with levels ranging from 0.09 to 7.19 parts per million (ppm). It’s important to note that lead accumulates in the body over time. Chronic exposure can lead to serious health issues, including neurological problems and developmental delays, especially in children and pregnant women.

Parabens

Parabens are commonly used as preservatives in cosmetics to prevent microbial growth. However, they are known to mimic estrogen in the body, potentially disrupting hormonal balance. This disruption has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive issues. Parabens can be identified on ingredient lists by prefixes like methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, and butylparaben.

PFAS: Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances

PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals,” are synthetic compounds found in various consumer products, including cosmetics. A 2021 study revealed that 62% of tested liquid lipsticks contained high levels of fluorine, indicating the presence of PFAS. These chemicals are persistent in the environment and the human body, and exposure has been associated with cancer, liver damage, and immune system effects.

Artificial Fragrances

The term “fragrance” on ingredient labels can be a catch-all for numerous undisclosed chemicals. Synthetic scents can cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, and have been linked to hormonal disruptions. Since manufacturers aren’t required to disclose the specific chemicals used in fragrances, consumers are often unaware of potential risks.

Synthetic Dyes

Many lipsticks achieve their vibrant colors through synthetic dyes derived from petroleum or coal tar sources. Some of these dyes have been associated with skin irritation and may contain heavy metal contaminants. Continuous exposure to such dyes raises concerns about potential long-term health effects.

Mica

While mica is a natural substance and generally recognized as safe, I’m including it because the mining process is linked to abhorrent labor practices. (Think “blood diamonds.”) Further, mined mica has inevitable heavy metal content that can range widely depending on the manufacturer and batch. This is why many companies, including Simple Glow, have started using synthetic mica which guarantees the quality and purity, avoids heavy metals, and supports fair labor practices. You may see it listed as ‘synthetic mica’, ‘bioglitter’ by its INCI name ‘Synthetic Fluorphlogopite’.

Simple Glow lists ‘mica*’ and notes that ‘*all colorants are synthetic for purity and to avoid micro-plastics’.

Why Should We Be Concerned?

The skin on our lips is thin and can absorb substances applied to it. Additionally, activities like eating and drinking can lead to the ingestion of lipstick ingredients. While individual exposures might be low, the cumulative effect over time, especially with frequent application, can be significant. Given that many of these chemicals can accumulate in the body, it’s prudent to be mindful of the products we use daily.

Making Safer Choices

To minimize potential risks:

  • Read Labels Carefully: Familiarize yourself with ingredient names and avoid products containing known harmful substances.
  • Choose Natural or Organic Products: These often have fewer toxins, though it’s still essential to read labels.
  • Stay Informed: Resources like the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database can help you understand the safety of cosmetic ingredients.

By staying informed and vigilant, we can enjoy the beauty and confidence that lipstick offers without compromising our health. Natural and safe doesn’t have to mean boring! Continued technological advances bring safer options for healthy color, including our interference highlighters, sparkly bronzers, and of course, highly pigmented lipsticks.
